Blended Retirement System
Clear

News Comments Updated
The Blended Retirement System combines servicemember’s traditional legacy retirement pension with distributions from the Thrift Savings Plan, creating a portable retirement option. The BRS will grandfather in servicemembers serving as of December 2017 under the legacy retirement system. No one currently serving will be automatically switched to the BRS, according the DoD’s Military Compensation website. (U.S. Air Force illustration/Staff Sgt. Alexandre Montes) Opted into BRS? Don’t forget this important step
A major benefit of the Blended Retirement System (BRS) is the free money you can now get from your service: Each time you contribute to your Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) retirement account, your service will match it, up to 5 percent of your pay.

Default Air Force Logo FYI: Blended Retirement System
One of the most wide-reaching and significant changes to military pay and benefits over the last 70 years took effect Jan. 1, 2018, with the implementation of the Uniformed Services Blended Retirement System, known as BRS. Nearly 1.6 million current service members have the option to remain in the current legacy “high-3” retirement system or to choose the BRS. Opt-in eligible service members have a year to make their retirement system election. The open period for the majority of service members is from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2018.
