11/12/2009 - PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Co. -- The 3rd Combat Communications Group and the 35th Combat Communications Squadron at Tinker AFB, Okla., both completed an Operational Readiness Inspection (ORI) conducted from November 1-10.
The 3rd CCG received an overall "Satisfactory" rating, while the 35th CBCS received an overall "Excellent." The 3rd CCG falls under the newly activated 689th Combat Communications Wing (AFSPC), located at Robins AFB, Ga., while the 35 CBCS is assigned to the 507 Air Refueling Wing (USAF Reserves).
These were the first ORIs of Combat Communications units conducted under the authority of the Air Force Space Command Inspector General since AFSPC took ownership of these inspections from Air Combat Command Inspector General on 1 October 2009. ORIs are conducted to evaluate and measure the ability of units with a wartime, contingency or force sustainment mission to perform assigned operational missions. Approximately 40 inspectors from AFSPC and ACC conducted the inspection.
"ORI's are exceptionally meticulous and require complete compliance and accountability in order to meet the highest standards," said Col. Theresa Giorlando, 689th CCW commander. "I am very proud of the men and women of the 3rd CCG and 35th CBCS as they continue to exemplify superior expeditionary communication support to the warfighter anytime...anywhere."
The 689th CCW's mission is to train, deploy, and deliver expeditionary and specialized communications, air traffic control and landing systems for Humanitarian Relief Operations and dominant combat operations, anytime, anywhere. Utilizing unique tactical skill sets, the 689th CCW specializes in conducting tactical operations in austere, deployed, and joint/coalition environments.
"ORI's are extremely challenging and rigorous inspections, and these ORIs were very important milestones in the transition between AFSPC and ACC Inspection teams regarding Combat Communication unit inspections," said Col. Scott Gilson, AFSPC Inspector General.
