11/16/2009 - PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Members of the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Association presented checks to local military organizations including Air Force Space Command during a presentation ceremony held at the Penrose House, Nov. 12, 2009.

The rodeo, which took place July 8-11, garnered $2000 in donations for Headquarters AFSPC this year, and the funds were warmly accepted by Maj. Gen. Michael Basla, vice commander of Air Force Space Command.

"Since 1946, the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Days has donated proceeds to charitable programs and services benefiting local military personnel and their families," said Kevin Estrem, former AFSPC command chief and 2009 rodeo president.
While not all the members of the PPOB Rodeo committee have served in the military, the rodeo, an annual Colorado Springs tradition, supports the military and its families and has been a long-time benefactor to local military charitable programs.

"Without this program, some of the wonderful programs available to military families may not be possible," said Chief Master Sgt. Treassia Hall, newly-appointed AFSPC first sergreant.

Every local military unit within Colorado Springs gets a slice of the proceeds pie. More than $ 50,000 in donations was distributed to local Army and Air Force units including the two local space wings and the Space Innovation and Development Center.
The donations are being put to good use at area AFSPC units to support recognition programs and charitable operations that benefit Airmen.

"The proceeds generated by the rodeo are used to help offset the cost of various programs such as the Command's Outstanding Airmen of the Year Program, as well as other enlisted recognition programs," said Master Sgt. Cindy Hayter, AFSPC command chief's executive assistant.

"The reason the rodeo raises money is to give back to the military each and every year," said Estrem. "It is our pleasure and honor to be able to continue to do this year after year...we're here and we're not going away."
