MAJOR GENERAL STEPHEN N. WHITING

Maj. Gen. Stephen N. Whiting is Deputy Commander, Air Force Space Command, Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado. He assists the commander in organizing, training, equipping and maintaining mission-ready space forces. These forces provide launch, missile warning, positioning, navigation and timing, communications, space electronic warfare, space control, command and control, and space domain awareness capabilities for United States Space Command and other combatant commands. The command manages a global network of satellite command and control, communications, missile warning and space launch facilities; and is responsible for space system development and acquisition. The command comprises more than 26,000 space professionals worldwide. Maj. Gen. Whiting also directs and coordinates the activities of the headquarters staff.

Maj. Gen. Whiting is a 1989 distinguished graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy with a degree in aeronautical engineering. He is a space operations officer and has commanded the 13th Space Warning Squadron, Clear Air Force Station, Alaska; the 614th Air and Space Operations Center and Joint Space Operations Center, Vandenberg AFB, California; the 21st Space Wing, Peterson AFB, Colorado; and the Combined Force Space Component Command and 14th Air Force, Vandenberg AFB, California.

The general’s staff assignments include positions at Headquarters, United States Air Force, Arlington, Virginia; United States Space Command, Peterson AFB, Colorado; United States Strategic Command, Offutt AFB, Nebraska; the Chief of Naval Operations’ Strategic Studies Group; the Office of the Deputy Secretary of Defense; and headquarters, Air Force Space Command, Peterson AFB. Prior to his current position, Maj. Gen. Whiting was the U.S. Space Command, Combined Force Space Component commander, and 14th Air Force, Air Force Space Command commander, Vandenberg AFB, California.
